The fish holds an especially unique place in Chinese culture, since this particular animal transcends its physical form to embody almost every important facet in one's life such as wealth, health, longevity luck, and even immortality.
The fish is often regarded as the origin of the beloved dragon image itself - indeed, archeologists have recently discovered that the 'long fish' evolved to the present-day image of the Chinese dragon. Therefore, the animal is often regarded as potent as the dragon in power and ability in churning out auspicious wealth luck.
Aside from this, the fish is known for its ability in promoting good health and a long life - Chinese style banquet dinners invariably includes one or more fish dishes as a nod to longevity luck.
It is also worth noting that the Chinese term for the fish, yu, is phonetically similar to the word for 'abundance'.
The Legend of the Fish Crossing the Dragon Gate
The association with fish is reflected in the legend of a carp that saw the top of a mountain and decided he was going to reach it. He swam upstream, climbing rapids and waterfalls letting nothing get in the way of his determination. When he reached the top there was the mythical "Dragon Gate" and when he jumped over he achieved immortality and was physically transformed into a beautiful dragon.
Several waterfalls and cataracts in China are believed to be the location of the Dragon Gate. This legend is used as an allegory for the drive and effort needed to overcome obstacles and achieve success.
The Fish and Feng Shui
Keeping live fish is believed to bring good Feng Shui. Fish represents success. If you have an aquarium, it is best displayed near the front entrance or in the living room. The arrowana fish is a particularly auspicious fish to keep. If you cannot keep a live fish, the symbol or image of a fish on a vase or in a painting will be good enough. Display these near your front door or living room.
Fish in figurine form made of crystal, Lucite or brass are also commonly decorated in homes, offices and other premises to enhance overall good luck and prosperity. |
